Stephen Ewing
Tutor, Test Prep and Academic Subjects
Stephen Ewing grew up in Charlottesville and graduated from Washington and Lee University
with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and a minor in mathematics. While at W&L, he worked
as a computer science teaching assistant and now works in clinical research at the University of
Virginia School of Medicine.
Stephen’s teaching journey began in high school during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he
founded a tutoring organization in New Mexico to help students struggling with the disruption to
their education. The program provided more than 1,400 tutoring sessions and is now run by the
local school district. He continued teaching in college as a computer science teaching assistant,
swim instructor, coach, and mentor, and has also spent time tutoring and mentoring students
through Abundant Life in Charlottesville. Through those experiences, Stephen discovered that
what he enjoys most about teaching is finding the explanation that finally makes a difficult idea
click for a student.
Stephen is inspired by teachers and mentors who push students beyond simply getting the right
answer. Some of his most formative teachers challenged him to explain why an answer worked,
approach a problem from another direction, and connect new material to concepts he already
understood.
Stephen hopes to continue his career in medicine while teaching and mentoring others. He also
wants to continue developing his skills in standardized-test instruction, particularly strategies for
pacing, decision-making, and helping students stay confident under pressure. He would like to
take a course in motivational interviewing and coaching communication to become better at
understanding what motivates different students and helping them build confidence and
independence
In his free time, Stephen enjoys swimming, hiking, following UVA sports, exploring
Charlottesville, and making regular trips to Bodo’s Bagels. He also spent 18 years as a
competitive swimmer, eventually becoming captain of the Washington and Lee varsity swim
team, an NCAA Scholar-All-American, and a conference record holder in the 1650 freestyle.
Years of early mornings, long practices, and balancing athletics with academics taught him
discipline, persistence, and comfort with working toward goals that take time. He brings those
same qualities to tutoring.
Stephen’s test preparation credentials include:
● 99th-percentile SAT/ACT scorer
● National Merit Scholar
● Perfect PSAT Math score
